Medusa in the Houses: Where you stop apologizing for Your Boundaries.

Previously, we discussed Medusa and how her energy expresses based on the element of the sign she is in.  Today I want to expand on who she is, her theme and another layer of how she shows up in our unique birth charts.  While the sign tells us how we hold our ground, the House Placement is where we are being asked to stop apologizing for setting boundaries.

Let’s go back and break apart her mythology and the key players in her story.  Medusa’s back story:

Medusa was unique in her birth in that she was born beautiful and human.  To us humans being born with such beauty is seen as a privilege.  But Medusa wasn’t born to humans, she comes from a lineage of deep sea- monstrosities. The child of Phorcys and Ceto- primordial sea deities.  Medusa was considered weak, hard to understand, fragile and temporary.  Her beauty isn’t viewed as a gift; it is a defect.

Medusa’s experience is different than that of her sisters.  Where they cannot die. Medusa’s mortality makes her acutely aware of her vulnerabilities. In an attempt to protect herself, Medusa seeks safety at Athena’s temple.  Creating an illusion of safety, believing that if she behaves in the right way, is quiet, dedicated and obeys the laws around her she will be shielded from harm.

Doing the “right thing” does not protect her, and even those that she thought would be her protectors betrayed her, siding with her attacker- Poseidon.  Instead of coming to her aid Athena curses her.  Making her into a monster, turning her hair into snakes and her gaze turning those who looked at her into stone.

Not wanting to cause further harm, Medusa exiled herself out to a remote sea cave in the middle of the ocean, protecting others from her cursed gaze.  But they still showed up, determined to overpower her.   When they looked upon her their anger was reflected back to them and they turned to stone.  Recognizing the flaws in the system and standing in fierce protection Medusa’s sisters go to the cave with her.

After centuries in the cave, Perseus shows up determined to be the savior.  He is knowledgeable, has a plan and is prepared.  By not directly looking at Medusa but instead uses a bronze shield as protection. to only see her reflection and to force Medusa to look upon it as well. Medusa does not cower when she sees her reflection.  She accepts all parts of herself- priestess, victim, monster and guardian.   She isn’t destroyed; she forces the civilization who cast her aside to wear her face as a supreme protective talisman.

How this resonates with Shadow Work.  Understanding each of these archetypes and their role in this story allows us to take a look at these energies through the lens of the myth.  Just like in Medusa’s story -not looking directly at ourselves, but using the myth to see how these themes show up in our lives.

Medusa- Representing rage and trauma to recovery.  Moving away from victimhood (my story, what happened to me), into claiming boundaries- what I will never allow to happen again, into sovereignty owning one’s power, rage and truth without seeking external validation or permission.

Poseidon-Represents unexamined privilege, acting without regard for others or sacred spaces. Where he shows up in people- Feeling entitled to cross boundaries because of his own desires, power and authority without considering how his actions impact others.  His recovery is accountability and containment.  Moving from taking because he wants it to emotional intelligence and self-regulation. Learning to honor the boundaries of others.

Athena- Athena represents hyper rationality, and emotional detachment.  Protecting the status quo at all costs.  Instead of punishing the instigator (Poseidon) she penalizes the victim (Medusa).   She shows up in us as the cold, rule following inner critic.  Prioritizing looking functional and maintaining an air of control over addressing raw pain. Her recovery comes from blame to recognizing flaws in the system.  Having heart centered wisdom.  Integrating wisdom and intellect.

The sisters (Stheno and Euryale)-The sisters represent loyalty and community.   The courage to stand behind someone in their darkest moments.  Refusing to let Medusa become isolated.   The are inner parts of ourselves, or our tribe, that accepts all parts of us.  Witnessing our traumas and faults without trying to “fix” them. Choosing to face the truth, deal with the hardships instead of turning their back on their sister Medusa for societal acceptance and respectability.   Their recovery is building spaces where the raw truth is honored.

Perseus-Represents the ego driven by societal pressures, and the need to be seen as the hero.  He does not know Medusa; he does not truly know her story.  He just knows that he will be seen as the hero if he slays her.   He is the parts of ourselves that ignore our natural instincts to fit in, gain approval and look successful to the outside world.  His recovery comes moving away from external validation and constantly performing for others into internal validation and self-worth.

When we look at asteroid Medusa in our chart, we aren’t just looking at a point on a wheel, we are being shown where the dynamics of her myth are being played out in our lives. While her sign shows how your protective shield operates.  The house placement shows where you encounter these archetypes.  Where you might be the accommodating priestess, the unyielding Poseidon, the cold detached Athena, and where you are being asked to fully step into your Medusa power and sovereignty.
