Jupiter in Exaltation

‍ ‍

A friend and I were discussing the fact that Jupiter is considered to be exalted in Cancer and why this is? Here are a few of my thoughts.  Curious what others think as well.

Jupiter is exalted, meaning its most beneficial spot is the sign of Cancer.  But why is this? When we think about Jupiter’s relationship with the astrological signs it is at home in the signs of Sagittarius and Pisces. While that Pisces creates a trine, Positive, energy flow to Cancer.  Cancer is inconjunct to Sagittarius. Meaning Sagittarius and Cancer are blind to each other.  So, isn’t Jupiter in Cancer missing part of its natural ability and talents? Why is it not considered exalted in Leo? Where it has a positive connection to Sagittarius.  Or the other Water or Fire signs- Scorpio and Aries? What is it about Cancer specifically that brings its exalted energy?

One of the things that we need to remember is that while Jupiter is considered to be a beneficial planet.  Jupiter in reality expands on things- it may create obstacles and hardships or seemingly expand them.  When these events are being impacted by Jupiter, we tend to have experiences that ease their burden. For instance, your car breaks down in front of an auto shop.

Thinking about the significations of the sign of Cancer-

‍ ‍Cancer is the water sign where we nurture ourselves, we mother, take care of and nurture others.  It is ruled by the moon, connected to our emotions, our intuition, our feminine.

When we consider the Jupiter in Cancer, this is an energy that is asking us to bring the wisdom, the expansion, the growth into ourselves and our emotional bodies.  While Jupiter is home in Sagittarius the fire signs can get a little too preachy or philosophical. Expanding on the lessons and knowledge that they've learned without internalizing them.  Instead of embodying them like Cancer.

Let’s consider all of the Water and Fire Signs

‍ ‍Jupiter in Aries- Aries, a fire sign, has a positive relationship with Sagittarius.   Aries is the first sign out of the gate, ruled by Mars.  It is impulsive and wants to rush into things.   Jupiter expands the fire.  This can lead to self-righteousness, impulse, and dogmatism.  Aries just isn’t patient enough.

‍ ‍Jupiter in Leo- Yes, Leo and Sagittarius have a positive relationship.  When we consider Leo, it is a fixed sign, ruled by the Sun.  Jupiter here expands the ego, the desire to be seen, and the need for external validation.  Jupiter in Leo can put off Queen/King energy, but what happens when it becomes performative for its ego and loses its generosity and just wats to build its own empire.

‍ ‍Jupiter in Scorpio- Scorpio is a fixed Water Sign ruled by Mars and Pluto.  Scorpio goes deep, it investigates, it can be very private and paranoid.  Jupiter here expands on the shadow work.  Scorpio is a bit too intense for Jupiter’s naturally optimistic Nature

Now let’s look at Jupiter in Cancer.  Is the blind spot Cancer has to Sagittarius actually a blessing in disguise? Because it is not relating to the Sagittarius energy it is not distracted by the distant horizon.   Jupiter in Cancer doesn’t have its eyes on the next big adventure or abstract philosophy.  It is focused on the present immediate reality of the heart, the home and the emotional body.  It isn’t looking for  accolades, growth or recognition outside of itself.  Jupiter in Cancer sees what is happening around it.  It wants to nurture and create safety.  But why does this make Cancer the ideal spot for Jupiter?

Cancer’s nurturing, protective, and home qualities give Jupiter a safe place to land.  Jupiter wants to provide blessings and Cancer wants to nurture.

It is important to remember that because a planet is exalted or in its ideal location in a sign does not mean that it does not come with hardships.   The Exaltation indicates that it is being given the opportunity to function optimally.   It’s not overly comfortable in its own home or in disagreement.  It wants to prove itself.

I think about my own personal experiences 12 years ago when we had Jupiter in Cancer and then make its transition into Leo.  I want to preface this by saying that I have a chart that is heavily influenced by Jupiter.  My experience does not mean that this will be anyone else’s.  We are all here to experience our own unique lives, lessons and how we are impacted varies. While Jupiter was still in Cancer, I had a large ovarian tumor- that Jupiter growth.  But I also happened to live in area of the country at the time that gave me access to top notch medical care.  Had a job that covered my medical expenses including emergency surgery, a week in the hospital, and follow up with specialists.  Plus, plenty of time to rest and recover-Jupiter’s blessings.   Later that year after Jupiter had made its move into Leo my sister passed.  While once again a major loss the health issues earlier that year gave me opportunity to spend extended time at home and with her.  Again Jupiter’s blessings. My point here is not to scare anyone, and yes there are multiple other things happening in a chart that point to these experiences.  I wanted to share my experience to illustrate how Jupiter operates in the shadows.  Providing protection and giving us the tools that we need to endure hardships.

‍ ‍

When you think back twelve/thirteen years when Jupiter was last making its transitions through Cancer and Leo what did you experience?

Were difficult circumstances tempered?

Did you experience something amazing that brought great joy ?

I’d love to hear about it and to look at how Jupiter shows up in your life.
