New Moon in Capricorn
We are experiencing our first new moon of the 2026 calendar year. I thought this would be a good opportunity to review what the New Moon represents and how we can use the cycles of the moon to help us create our best year yet.
A New Moon happens when the moon sits directly between Earth and the Sun. Making it invisible and creating a dark night sky i.e. no light is reflected by the moon. In other words, we cannot see it. It is when we can best see the expansiveness of the night sky- the stars, planets and other celestial bodies.
In the astrological chart we can recognize a new moon because the symbols for the sun and moon are sitting right next to each other. Which appear as a circle with a dot in it for the sun and a crescent shaped moon.
The new moon phase is a time to set our intentions. While you likely did this at the New Year. Take this moment to clarify and reaffirm your goals. You might have originally been thinking about your New Year’s intentions during the Sagittarius New Moon. Which is optimistic and forward thinking. This new moon is asking for action and effort toward your goals. Since you likely have already started working towards your goals take a moment to reflect on what you are doing, is it working for you? Or do you need to change your approach?
The moon represents emotions, subjective experiences, mothers, and dogs. It is our habits. What we need to feel comfortable and secure.
In Astrology each planet governs one or two signs, faces challenges in others, and is exalted in another. Here is how this applies to the moon.
Home, where it is most comfortable- CANCER
Detriment, where it does not do well- CAPRICORN
Exalted, where it finds the most success- TAURUS
Fall, It’s most difficult placement-SCORPIO
A moon in a challenging position isn't necessarily destined for misfortune. It just means that it is not working in a supportive environment. It means being expected to make a bit more effort or approach things from a new perspective in order to accomplish tasks.
Do not worry that the moon does not do well in Capricorn. This does not mean that we are meant to experience difficulty. It just means that the moon wants to connect with emotions. While Capricorn wants to do the work to move ahead. It is grounded and practical. It wants to share emotions in the event that it is serving a purpose, working towards a goal. It is asking, “are you fully committed to your goal?”
When thinking about the Moon's phases, we begin with the new moon—an ideal time to set intentions. As the cycle progresses to the full moon, our efforts become more visible, allowing us at the full moon to reflect on our achievements and make any necessary adjustments before the next new moon arrives.
